A beautifully illustrated copy of The Fables of Aesop, illustrated by Edward J. Detmold. Published by Hodder and Stoughton, London. 1909. This book is in fine condition, with all it's illustrations, although some are coming slightly unstuck this is easily fixed. There is some slight spotting and ageing to some of the pages, and a very minor lean to the spine, otherwise this is a lovely clean copy of a beautiful version of the classic fables bound in original maroon cloth with gilt gold lettering and decorations and an inset front piece illustration of a monkey and two travellers. This copy would be a worthwhile addition to any collection of fine binding and special edition books.

Published by William Heinneman, London; 1912. Deluxe Edition, this copy is number 630 of 1450, signed by Arthur Rackham. It is tightly bound in original vellum, with gold gilt detailing to the front board and spine. This beautiful book of Aesop’s Fables is in Near Fine condition. The cream boards have some spotting, predominantly to the top edge and to the spine and there is some very slight rubbing, otherwise they are lovely and bright and free from damage and blemished. Internally, there is some spotting to the inside of the boards and the free endpapers, but the rest of the pages are beautifully clean, bright and, apart from the odd age spot, free from marks or damage. All 13 colour plates are present and in stunning condition, bright and intricate in their detail. It is also adorned with numerous black and white illustrations, depicting scenes from the fables.

Originally penned between 620 and 560 BC by Aesop, the morals of the fables are still very relevant today and are enjoyed by readers of all ages. Arthur Rackham’s illustrated version of Aesop’s Fables was originally released in 1912 in time for the christmas season and rivalled the commercial sales he enjoyed with “Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens”.
