Published by Harper & Brothers, New York. 1945. 8vo. This is the true first edition first printing with ‘first edition’, ‘I-U’ and ’10-5’ on copyright page. Frontispiece and illustrations are by Garth Williams. This is a lovely copy of the classic children’s tale by this popular author. There is some very slight marginal toning to the pages, some light creasing to the first few pages and some very minor marking and rubbing to the boards, otherwise the book is in Fine condition. The front endpapers have been mounted upside-down, and the book is bound in its original pictorial cloth. The book is encased in it’s original dustjacket, illustrated by Garth Williams with original price of $2.25 still on the top corner of front flap. The jacket is in Very Good condition, with some browning and edge wear, it is a little frayed with loss to the spine ends and a further hole to the spine and lower panel and splits at the corners.
In all this is an attractive copy of a children’s classic, which has also been enjoyed by many an adult over the years. Indeed, it is very much for all ages and delights all a wide variety of readers, in much the same way as Winnie the Pooh, Alice in Wonderland and Wind in the Willows. As such, this would make an excellent addition to any collectoion of modern first editions.
